Supplements for Menopause

Black Cohash: Hot Flashes

Although many supplements have been used menopausal hot flashes, Black Cohash is one of the only ones that has good evidence of benefit at 540mg per day. Women have also used it for night sweats, vaginal dryness, heart palpitations, nervousness, and irritability but this is less established.

 

Evening Primrose Oil: Breast Pain and Beyond

This supplement has been used for younger women for PMS, but it also shows some benefit for breast pain, hot flashes and mood changes. The dose is usually 500mg per day. Ask your doctor before taking this supplement in combination with other medications.

Melatonin: Insomnia

Inability to fall asleep, waking in the middle of the night, and hot flashes at night are common causes of poor sleep during the menopausal transition. Melatonin is a hormone that your body makes to help you fall asleep gently and 3-10mg per night is a typical dose.

 

Ashwagandha: Mood Changes and Sexual Health

This supplement can help with mood changes and some women find it improves vaginal lubrication and sexual satisfaction as well.
